A historical drama directed by Jerzy Hoffman, released in 1974. The film is based on a novel by the Polish writer Henryk Sienkiewicz. It was nominated for a Best Foreign Film Oscar in 1974.
The film is set in the 17th century during the Swedish invasion of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, known as The Deluge, which was eventually repulsed but a quarter of the population of the country died through war and plague, and the economy was greatly damaged.
